Chimney Repairs & Repointing In Brighton & Burgess Hill
Crumbling stack, leaks or damp around the chimney?
Repointing, flashings, flaunching and rebuilds across Sussex
The chimney is the most exposed part of any roof, and on Sussex's older housing it's often the first thing to fail - crumbling mortar, cracked flaunching, rusting flashings and damp coming through the ceiling below. We repair, repoint and where needed rebuild chimney stacks across Brighton, Burgess Hill and the surrounding towns, along with the lead flashings that seal them to the roof. Getting the chimney watertight protects not just the stack but the whole roof and the rooms beneath it.

What To Look For In A Chimney Repairs & Repointing Specialist
They Check The Whole Stack
Damp around a chimney can come from the pointing, the flaunching, the flashings or the pots - and often more than one at once. A proper roofer inspects the whole stack and the flashings together, rather than just repointing the obvious crack and leaving the real leak untouched.
Proper Lead Flashings
The join between the chimney and the roof is sealed with lead - stepped flashings, soakers and an apron. Cheap alternatives like mortar fillets or flashing tape crack and fail fast. Look for a roofer who works lead properly, because that's what keeps the chimney watertight for decades.
Safe Access
Chimney work is high, exposed and awkward, so it needs proper scaffold access, not ladder-work. A serious roofer sets up safe access to the stack - which also means they can do a thorough, careful job rather than a rushed one.
Doing It Properly vs A Quick Patch
| N Fullers Roofing | Quick Patch | |
|---|---|---|
| Pointing | Raked out and repointed | Smeared over the surface |
| Flashings | Proper lead, dressed in | Mortar fillet or tape |
| Flaunching | Renewed around the pots | Left cracked and open |
| Access | Safe scaffold to the stack | Rushed off a ladder |
| Result | Watertight for years | Damp back next winter |
Chimney And Roof Together
Damp blamed on the chimney sometimes turns out to be slipped slates or a failed valley nearby. While we're up there we check the surrounding roof too - see our roof repairs service.

Why is damp appearing on my chimney breast?
It's usually water getting in at the top - through cracked flaunching, open mortar joints, or failed flashings where the stack meets the roof. Sometimes it's condensation in an unused flue. We inspect the whole stack and flashings to find the actual source rather than guessing, then fix that.
Do I need to repoint or rebuild my chimney?
If the brickwork is sound but the mortar joints have weathered, repointing will sort it. If the bricks themselves are spalling and crumbling, or the stack is leaning, a partial or full rebuild is the safer answer. We'll show you the condition and give you an honest recommendation.
Can you remove a chimney I don't use?
Yes. If a stack is redundant and decaying, we can take it down to below the roof line and weather the roof over neatly, or reduce and cap it. It removes a maintenance headache and a common source of leaks. We'll talk through the options and any building considerations.
What is flaunching?
Flaunching is the sloping bed of mortar at the top of the chimney that holds the pots in place and sheds water off the stack. When it cracks - which it does over time - water gets down into the brickwork, so renewing it is a common and important repair.
Do you fit chimney cowls?
Yes. Cowls keep rain and birds out of the flue and can stop draughts and downdraught on unused chimneys. We'll advise the right type for your situation and fit it while we're working on the stack.
Is the work guaranteed?
Yes. All our chimney work is backed by a written workmanship guarantee, and we'll explain what's covered before we start. Lead and materials carry their own manufacturer's warranties.
What Sussex Homeowners Say
Real feedback from customers across Brighton, Burgess Hill and Sussex. Star ratings reflect completed roofing work.
"We had a leak coming through the bedroom ceiling of our Victorian terrace in Hove. N Fullers traced it to a cracked lead flashing round the chimney - not where the stain was - and had it sorted properly within a couple of days. Tidy, honest and a fair price."
"The old felt roof on our extension in Burgess Hill was leaking every time it rained. They fitted a new EPDM rubber roof with proper falls so no more pooling. Great job, cleaned up after themselves and explained everything clearly."
"Full re-roof on our 1930s semi in Worthing - stripped it back, new underlay, battens and tiles, all new flashings. The scaffolding went up and the whole job was done in under a week. Looks superb and the quote was itemised with no surprises."
"Our roof in Haywards Heath was green with moss and the gutters kept blocking. They cleared the lot, treated the roof and cleared the gutters, and spotted a slipped tile while they were up there. Really pleased with the difference."
"Chimney on our Lewes cottage was crumbling and letting damp in. N Fullers repointed it, renewed the flaunching and put proper lead flashings in. They understood it's a period property and did it sympathetically. Highly recommend."
